In thinking about my offering for the Longwood tree, I wanted to create miniature versions of art that represented my current style - and would be clearly visible and eye-catching. These trees are beautiful giants!

I chose small collages, planning the white of the page to keep the piece bright. When my mind turned to themes, it went to folklore, as is my frequent inspiration.

I selected candles and lanterns to represent the Winter Solstice, seen as the return of the light after the longest night.
I selected plants that are associated with Solstice and wintertimes - whether for their predominance in decorations of the season or their folkloric symbolism. Holly and Ivy, mistletoe, and the like.
The collages are simple, layered papers and images, yet each has been hand tinted, or hand embellished to make them personal and truly one-of-a-kind. I look forward to seeing them on the tree!
My ceramic ornaments are a family tradition, really. I have been making these annually since I was in High school! Most often I use my grandmother's antique cookie cutters for the shapes - continuing a legacy of “making” in my medium as opposed to sugar and spice. I think she would be thrilled to see these on the tree!
You can view these beautiful ornaments on the Bellefonte Arts community tree at Longwood Gardens, during the annual A Longwood Christmas (Nov 21, 2025 through Jan 11, 2026).
And if you are in Bellefonte, stop by the shop to see some of Jenny's ceramic tiles, handmade jewelry using gemstones and her handmade beads components, and her mixed media collage and shrine pieces.
